Surprise Cake Pattern

Hi! This is a free pattern that I designed to help promoting Amipoderosas, which is an Amigurumi Patterns Ebook that aims to bring attention to professions and activities that are predominantly performed by men. With these patterns we also seek to represent diversity, promoting love and respect for all body types.

Supplies:

  • Yarn in any color of your choice (My cake was crocheted using these colors: base in white, topping in light pink, Chantilly in cream, strawberries in red and green, granulate in rainbow yarn). The yarn of my choice was a sport wieght (12 wpi) called Amigurumi Soft by Circulo;
  • 2,5 mm crochet Hook;
  • Scissors;
  • Tapestry needle;
  • Embroidery needle;
  • Waterproof Glue (optional).

Abbreviations:

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • st: stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • inc: increase
  • dec: invisible decrease
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • hdc-inc: half double crochet increase
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • BLO: work in back loops only

Finished size: aprox. 6,5cm (2.5”) x 6 cm (2.3”) when crocheted with a sport (12 wpi) weight yarn and 2.5mm hook.

Pattern:

Bottom

White yarn or any other color you like.

1. 8 sc in the MR (8)

2. 8 inc (16)

3. [1 sc, 1 inc] x 8 (24)

4. 1 sc, 1 inc, [2 sc, 1 inc] x 7, 1 sc (32)

5. [3 sc, 1 inc] x 8 (40)

6. 2 sc, 1 inc, [4 sc, 1 inc] x 7, 2 sc (48)

7-25: 48 sc (48) – 19 rounds.

26. [4 sc, 1 dec] x 8 (40)

27. 1 sc, 1 dec, [3 sc, 1 dec] x 7, 2 sc (40)

Fasten off and leave a long tail

Do a reverse MR. Fold the cylinder and sew its top to its bottom as shown in this picture: .

Note.: If you choose to do a naked cake, change to filling color in rounds 12 and 13 and then go back to the cake color. 

Topping

Light pink or any other color you like – Work joining rounds from rounds 1 to 5.

4. 1 hdc, 1 hdc-inc, [2 hdc, 1 hdc-inc] x 9, 1 hdc (40)

From here work in continuous rounds

Fasten off.

Chantilly

Attach chantilly yarn color to the remaining loop of the topping’s first st in round 6.

Repeat [1 bubble st, 1 chain, skip 1 loop and make a sl st at the next one] 16 times, you will have 17 bubble stitches at the end. Fasten off and leave a yarn tail to sew its inner circumference to the topping. Fasten off.

Strawberry (Make 2)

  1. 4 sc in the MR (4)
  2. [1 inc, 1 sc] x 2 (6)
  3. [1 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (9)
  4. 9 sc (9)
  5. [2 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (12)
  6. 12 sc (12)
  7. 6 dec (6)

Fasten off.

Insert hook between the stitches of round 7 and attach the green yarn there.

[Make 3 ch, then 2 sc from the 2nd ch from hook (this is one leaf). Attach this leaf with a sl st in the holes between the stitches from round 7] . Repeat this sequence in brackets to make two or three more leafs. Fasten off.

Assembly:

1. Glue or sew the two strawberries in the center of the topping;

2. To embroider the cake color sprinkles use a rainbow yarn or many pieces of yarn in different colors.
