Mega Charizard Y

Hi folks!

I hope you all are doing fine ^-^ Today’s pattern is pokemon related, specifically with the last pokemon game that was launched, pokemon x/y. Since they released Pokemon Origins, I became in love for Mega Charizard X and I really enjoy the way he looks like and his colors. However, when I started playing pokemon x/y my favorite charizard mega evolution became Mega Charizard Y, haha. That’s why I decided to make Charizard Y first, I really wanted to have the star of my team in my room <3

Before someone asks, I do intend to make Mega Charizard X, but first I have the need to make a World of Warcraft amigurumi!! So, yes, my next pattern it is going to be a WoW character! :D Can you guess which one?

– Fiberfill;
– Tapestry needle and scissors;
– White felt;
– Blue, black and white fabric paint;

– Hair-brush.

Notes:

– I always do my crochet works using continuous rounds;
– Everytime I will do a crochet work, the first thing I do is take a look in the entirely pattern before start doing it, so, I can have an idea of how the pattern works. Well, I recommend you to do the same;
– For sewing the pieces together you will use the tapestry needle;
– To make the eyes you will use the felt and the fabric paint;
– To make the fire in his tail you will use yarn and a hair-brush;
– Please be extremely careful while handling the wire, it may hurt you if you don’t handle it properly.

Assembly:

1. The first step is sewing the head to the body. Although, first we have to cut some wire to insert in Charizard’s body, which will give his neck some support:

I. Cut some wire in the size of twice his full body (if the head was already sewn to his body);

Wire

II. Then, bend the wire, which should be at the same size of his full body (if the head was already sewn to his body);

III. Bend the tips of the wire and wrap them with adhesive tape:

Bend the tips of the wire
Wrap with adhesive tape

IV. Now, insert it inside his body already stuffed with fiberfill;

body4

V. Finally, stick the end of the wire in his head end sew it to his body.

(The step below has a photo tutorial that it is similar and will help you in this first step too)

2. In the second step we are going to sew the tail to the body. First, stuff the tail and then you are going to put some wire in his tail, which will make it poseable:

I. Cut some wire and bend it in the same size as his tail:

II. Bend the tips:

III. Wrap the tips with adhesive tape:

V. Sew the tail to his body and sew the horns of his tail to it.

3. In the third step it is time to sew his arms to the body.

I. Before that, stuff the arms and then sew them to the body. After that cut some wire and insert it in his arms. Insert from one arm to another as shown in the photo bellow. Cut the extra wire, bend the tips and hide them.

arms

II. Then sew the fingers to each arm.

III. At the end sew the little wings to the arms.

littlewing2

4. In the fourth step you are going to sew his wings:

I. Pick up one orange wing and one teal wing and sew the bottom of them together with a 0.25mm nylon.

II. Use a thicker wire into the wings. I used a number 14 galvanized wire. Cut some wire in the shape bellow, which is the wing’s shape. Moreover, it is necessary to leave a long wire coming out of the extremity which will be sewn to the body (take a look in the photos bellow). This long wire it will works as a support for the wing and it needs to be long, because it is going to penetrate his body and reach his legs (Soon, I will explain this better):

wing4

wing
Here it is the long wire. It needs to be long enought to penetrate Charizard’s body and reach his legs. (This one is too long, I had t cute it a bit)

III. Now position the wire between the two sides of the wings and make a line of sc joining the two sides with the wire between them:

wing3

wing2

IV. Sew the wing’s horn to the wing;

V. Wrap the tip of the wire with orange yarn. Use some glue to fix the yarn into it:

wing9

VI. When you finish, it should look like this:

wing1

VI. After that, it is time to put the two wings in the body. First, stick the long double wire near his neck in the middle of his back until it reaches his legs in the same way as the photos bellow. This is necessary to give support to his wings.

Stick the long wire near his neck in the middle of his back

V. Then, sew the wings to his body.

5. Sew the underbelly to the body and tail;

6. Sew the legs to the body;

7. Sew the feet to the legs;

8. Sew the toes;

9. Sew his cream jaw to the head. However, don’t sew his “cheeks” to the head. Just sew until the end of the his snout.

10. Before sewing his cheeks we will sew the snout to the head in the same places as shown in the photos bellow:

I. These photos are showing the places where the snout should be sewn.

II. After you have sewn the snout, it is time to sew his cheeks. They will be sewn on the final part of the snout.

11. Now, sew the inner part of the snout to his head, which will guarantee that nobody will be able to pull up the snout;

12. Sew the horns to the head;

13. In the 13th step you will sew the eyebrows and nostrils to the head

I. First, draw in a paper two molds of his eyes;

II. Position the eyes in his head and pin them with adhesive tape in the best place;

III. Sew the eyebrows following the mold;

IV. Now, sew the nostrils in his snout.

14. Now, let’s make his fire:

I. Cut some pieces of yellow and orange yarn;

II. Atach them to his tail, like that:

Attach the yarn to his tail

III. Untagle the yarn, like that:

IV. Brush the yarn and it is finished.

15. Finally, it is time to make his eyes

I. Pick up the molds that you have already done and pin them with adhesive tape in a white felt;

II. Cut the white felt;

III. Now, you will paint his eyes. First, paint his iris, which should be red (shiny) or blue (usual)

eyes4

IV. Wait for the paint to dry and then paint his pupil using black

V. Again, wait for the paint to dry and then paint the light reflect using white

VI. After the paint has dried, use the contact glue to glue the eyes into his face

16.  The last thing to do is his teeths. Use white felt to make them. Cut the felt and glue inside his snout, leaving the tooth tip visible.

  2. Hi I have made the amigurimi but it is much smaller than your photo, but I followed the pattern exactly. Any Ideas of what happened. What size yarn did you use?

  3. Hi! I love your pattern. I’m having trouble with the wings, because you have the blue one smaller than the orange one, but like it’s the same pattern mines are the same size, the blue is even a little bit bigger. So now I’got to get the wire but I’m not sure if it’s gonna work out like it’s supposed to.

  4. Hi Mia can you tell me what size of wire did you use? Thank you for the amazing pattern my grandson will be happy this Christmas

  5. Ok I am a little confused on the body row 45 where you start decreasing. Row 44 stops with 24 stitches. Now if I dec shouldn’t I be doing 20sc before I dec again. Because it’s not coming out right? There are extra stitches and if I only do 18 SC that does not make the count 22 please help

  6. Ok so I’m just learning to follow patterns and I’m not understanding your abbreviation and how many do I chain when I start my rounds? Because you go right into sand single stitch 6

I have a great nephew who is 3 , his mom was almost killed by so called friends about 2 months ago. She has a long, hard road ahead of her but thank God she is seeing progress. Anyway , he LOVES dragons so I’m going to try and make him at least one. I will no doubt have questions but will give it my all so I don’t have too many . I’m almost finished with a dragon hat for him. Again , thank you sooo much.

  21. OMG! My mother loves Charizard. I totally appreciate you for creating this pattern with such detail. It looks amazing. I plan on attempting this the early part of next year for her. I will definitely let you know how it turns out. Thank You!!!

  22. i made just the head and body but its such a great tutorial! with the videos i understand everything and i am afraid of my finished Charizard.
    Thanks a lot for sharing this pattern! <3

  23. Hi Mia! Thank you so much for this amazing pattern. I searched so long for a “normal” dragon. My son is 6 and he doesn’t like these tiny dragons. So I decided to create a pattern on my own by looking to dragon pictures but I’m pretty new in this amigurumi thing so it’s not so easy for me to do this. Yesterday evening my sister-in-law send me a link to your dragon and I loved it. But I thought my son wouldn’t because he didn’t like every dragon I showed to him. And surprise surprise… he loved it too!!! Immediately he called his auntie to thank her that she has found this pattern. So I want to thank you in his name too for this wonderful work. I have to crochet other things at the moment but when I’ve finished the dragon I’ll write you again. Do you have an Instagram account? I share my crafts on Instagram. So I can tag you there.
    Wish you a wonderful day :)

  24. First of all I wish to say WOOWWWW … it is beautiful! … Secondly, if I may ask please, how many skeins of yarn are needed of each colour ? Or metres maybe? Thanks in advance !

  25. janna van der meer - terpstra

    Wauw i love this design cant wait for the charizard x .. hope you still gonna make 1 🙈

  26. Oi Mia!

  27. No I didnt get any answer.

    I made a new creme belly and changed the width and length.

    I followed the pattern as far as it was possible and compared with the body after a few rows and then adapted subsequently.
    When the belly is wide enough stop increaseing and later dec. earlier.

    When its long enough comparing to the body and tail, finnish!

    My Charizard was finnished just a few days ago it got really nice! Good luck

      I am up to making the wings and I am wondering if anyone out there understands the pattern? Struggling big time so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

      1. Hi, im not sure if I can help you but what is your problem? Maybe any of us know how to solve it from our experience?

        1. Janine Morrissey

          Thank you so much for replying, I appreciate it greatly. My problem is with the wings. Where it says Row 1: ch 2, sc (1)
          Row 2: inc (2)
          Row 3: inc (4)
          Row 4: inc, sc 2, inc (6)
          Row 5: inc, sc 4, inc (8)
          Row 6: inc, sc 6, inc (10
          Row 7: inc, sc 8, inc (12)
          Row 8: inc, sc 10, inc (14)

          I am a little confused. So I am thinking that we chain 2, then do 1 single crochet in the second stitch from the hook, do we then turn the work and do an increase in that single crochet, then turn the work and then do an increase in the next row and so on/

          I have made a number of things, but have never seen a pattern written quite like this one.

          Any advice you can give me would be wonderful. Thank you once again for replying.

          1. Hi

            Yes exactly as you say, you turn when you do the next row. I think i remember that i finished every row with a chain stitch, that makes the next row easier. Try that! :)

          2. Janine Morrissey

            Thank you I will do that and see if it works any better. It is certainly a bit of a pain. Will let you know how I go. Thanks again for replying

  28. I am interestedin doing this pattern for my son for his birthday, however, when i read the pattern i am a bit confused as to the number of stitches for each round right from the beginning (starting with the body). You say to do 8 sc on mr, and then increase for round 2 (ending up with 16 sc), then for the round 3 you say to sc, increase (24 stitches). If you are increasing (basically doubling your stitches every row), should it not be 32 sc in round 3 and not 24 sc? Some clarification would be grerat before I dive into this project and find out that it doesn’t turn out the same as what you have done and then I cant take my yarn back! Thanks

    1. Round 3 is 1 sc in the first stitch, then 2 in the next. Each round is increased by an extra sc in each set. R-4 is a sc in next2 stitches then 2 in the next stitch. 1 then 2 repeated all the way around. Then 2 and 2 and so on. hope this helps

  29. Hi,
    Thank you for this pattern!
    I’m gonna make one for my son.
    I hope to finish by christmas ;-)
    It would make a lovely gift.
    Thank you,
    Tania (Belgium)

  30. Oi Mia.

  31. Hi, im making this right now and im done with the body, head and small parts.
    Now I have a problem when I made the belly in cream. Its way too big to fit the body! (Same yarn and needle used)
    Am i the only one having this problem??

    1. Oi! Tambem estou fazendo, e a barriga creme ficou muito grande.

    2. Hi, im about to sew my belly on, but im having the same problem. Did you get a reply at all? or figure it out?

      1. I though I had the same problem, I just stuffed the body a little more to make it fatter and made it work. Pictures on my ravelry page

  32. Help! I’m suck on sewing the feet to the legs and the toes to the feet and arms, any photos showing how or instructions would be most helpful

  33. Hello, looking forward to trying this. I just have a question about the black vs orange. The black charizard looks shorter/rounder/plumper (shorter neck too). did you alter the pattern or was it the yard type or size of hook that changed this? Thanks!

  34. Hi Mia!
    I love your pattern! It’s amazing. :)
    I would love to make this for my brother and his friends, but I wanted to ask a question first. If other people want me to make them an ami, could I sell the creation and give you credit? I wasn’t sure if you don’t want people selling the written pattern only or if it would be both the written pattern and the amigurumi.
    Just wanted clarification. :)
    Thanks so much and keep up the amazing creating!
    ~Anna

  36. OMG this is awesome Ty so much for sharing,I love dragon’s and am a devoted wow player. I would love to see which one you do so I can add to my collection.

  39. Olá Mia, primeira vez no seu blog e primeira vez q tento seguir a receita em inglês e msm tendo algum conhecimento to me embananando com alguns termos técnicos…
    mr seria o msm q magic ring? meus neurônios estão me matando huahauah.

  41. Thank you very much. My grandson is turning 6 on feb 20 and all he wanted was for me to make him charizard slippers. He will be very surprised when I give him this stuff charizard too. I very appreciated this pattern. Thank you again. Deb

  44. Pokemon Awesomeness 4 Ever!

    Hi again! I would like to ask a few question if you don’t mind! Could I get through this pattern by using 1 or 2 balls (each 100g) of orange? Do I HAVE to use wire? I don’t exactly have any at the moment. Thanks!
    <3 all your patterns! Now all I need is mega charizard X to complete the trio!
    P.S. I love Pokemon Origins too!

    1. Pokemon Awesomeness 4 Ever!

      Hi Carla Whiteman! Hope you don’t mind me replying to your question! Here are the options!
      1. you can needle felt them
      2. You can sculpt them from clay
      3. You can sew them from felt (this is what I usually do!)
      Hope that helps!

  45. Hello Mia! Your work is really awesome! I would love to see Espeon or Flareon (or any Eeveevolution). Greetings from Argentina!

  46. Amazing pattern! For free too! Thank you :) I am making this for my son, but am unsure about the stitch counts on the cream belly… Where you do the decreases, your stitch counts seem to have 2 stitches more than you end up with :( for instance, decrease sc 18 decrease, would give you 20 stitches, but you say 22. Am I being dumb lol!

  47. Carla Whiteman

    Hello,
    I love your pattern, very easy to follow, ive made alot of pokemon, but this is the best up to now :) ive come to this part of the patter for the tail –
    Row 34: 3 inc, sc 20, inc (24)
    Row 35: sc in each sc (24)
    Row 36-44: sc in each sc (24)
    Row 45: dec, sc 18, dec (22)
    it does not add up, have you just miscounted and its ment to be an inc,sc20,inc??

    1. I think the “3 inc” in Row 34 is a typo. I took the 3 out since every other row is just “inc, sc x, inc”

    2. It’s from Rows 45 and forward that I am having problems with.
      Row 45 reads “dec, sc 18, dec (22)
      That doesn’t add up
      I can’t figure out if it should really be:

      dec, sc 18, dec (20)
      or
      dec, sc 20, dec (22)
      or
      2 dec, sc 18, dec (22)
      or
      dec, sc 18, 2 dec (22)

      I’m so confused

  48. Going to start this prosject and love all the work you have put into this pattern. Respect!! I just wonder how much of each yarn you used? Like two of orange yarn and one of white etc?

  49. Hi Mia, I am making this gorgeous dragon but am stuck on the head, do you start with a magic circle first & if so how many SC’s do you need????

  50. Hi Mia!
    Thanks for sharing your beautiful patterns :) you are so kind!
    I have a doubt with charizard’s pattern. When I have to do the pieces number one of the wings…do I have to increase with 2 hdc or two stitches together?
    I will be so gratefull If you answer my question!
    Bye bye and thanks again!

  52. Hi I was thinking of making both charizards so i was wondering how much wire you used? I fond some floral wire at a dollar store that looks like it is double the thickness of the wire that you used.I was wondering if that would work just as well. I’ve only been doing amigurumi a short while but I pretty much have all the basics down.

    1. Hi! I don’t know, I think I used about 150cm of wire to make Charizard Y. I think that it will be difficult for you to crochet his wings with thicker wire. I used one with 2,11mm diameter.

  53. They look really big! Awesomeness for cuddle size! First get a flipping crochet hook from cheap shop then, here i come charizard normal and mega!

  54. OMG! OMG! Thanks so much for your generosity on posting your patterns! They look exactly the same as in the anime. Time to buy a new crochet hook and yarn!

  55. Monica Telles de Salles

    Mia!
Monica

    1. Muito obrigada, Monica! Infelizmente não tenho nenhuma para te indicar! Também gostaria muito de saber!

      Obrigada pela sugestão! Irei refletir sobre a possibilidade de fazê-los!

      Abraços! :)
